Surfing in Ghana: A Beginner's Guide to Busua Beach
Ghana has a surf scene of its own — and for beginners, Busua Beach might just be one of the best places in the world to learn. Here's everything you need to know.
Why Busua Beach?
Busua is Ghana's only real surf destination. The beach faces southwest into the Atlantic, picking up consistent swells — especially from April through September when the South Atlantic sends long-period waves rolling into the bay. The beach break is forgiving for beginners: not too powerful, not too shallow, and with a long sandy beach to wash up on if you fall (and you will fall).
The Surf School
West Coast Surf School operates directly on Busua Beach and has been teaching surf lessons to visitors for years. They offer both private and group sessions, and the instructors are patient, experienced, and speak excellent English. Beginners are typically in the water within 30 minutes of arrival, and most people stand up on their first session.
Equipment — boards and rash guards — is provided. You just need to show up with sunscreen, a swimsuit, and a willingness to fall off a lot.
Best Time to Surf in Ghana
The primary surf season in Ghana runs from April to September. During these months, South Atlantic swells generated by storms far out to sea reach the Ghanaian coast with enough energy to produce rideable waves consistently. Outside of this window, conditions are calmer but waves still exist — offshore winds and occasional swells keep things interesting year-round.
For beginners, the shoulder months of April, May, and September can be ideal: waves with enough push to practice on, but not so powerful as to be intimidating.
What to Expect as a Complete Beginner
Your first session will likely be on the sand before you ever touch the water. Instructors teach you the pop-up technique — the movement of going from lying on the board to standing — until it feels natural. Then you'll paddle out into the whitewash (broken waves close to shore) and practice riding the foam in. By the end of a 90-minute session, most beginners have stood up at least a few times.
